Find out more about this innovative mixing console and how it
dominates the music market
Solid State Logic, or SSL, is a company that manufactures high-end mixing consoles and recording studio hardware.
The company is located in the United Kingdom.
Dominated by large format consoles feeding multi-track tape machines manufactured by companies such as Studer, the
1970s music scene had few other options. Both the equipment and the environment they were used in were expensive to
maintain and source, making studio recording once a high entry cost business. However, a series of developments
have now made this fact defunct, making music technology more available for the lay person just starting out.
Analogue to digital conversion and encoding
Converter technology developments that can transform analogue signals into digital signals have resulted in a
variety of additional technical developments. DSP or Digital Signal Processing technology has led both to the
creation of digital mixing desks and DSP-based computer recording platforms such as ProTools. This technology has
in consequence created both a cheaper and lower maintenance alternative to the analogue mixing desk and a cheaper
alternative to the multi-track analogue tape machine.
Modular equipment
Pioneers such as Automated Processes Inc experimented with modular equipment design because the problematic high
cost led to a smaller market for large format consoles. API's product offering of single items in the signal chain
including pre-amps, equalizers and compressors were all based around a flexible central power supply. This proved
popular for buyers who wanted very high quality but could not afford to buy a minimum of 24 channels at once.
SSL response
SSL has tried to adapt their product offering to address these developments while maintaining a successful presence
in the large format console market. SSL large format consoles remain popular and continue to deliver both their
latest 9000-series consoles and the older 4000 series consoles.
4000 series
The SSL 4000 G+ continues to be popular among mixing engineers in rock genres for classic-style consoles.
Platinum-album Bristol band Massive Attack based their new studio facility based around a 4000 G+ console in 2005,
and the SSL company claims that the 4000 has been the mixer behind more platinum selling albums than all other
consoles combined.
5000 series
5000M is one of most esoteric and expensive mixing consoles from Solid State Logic and is primarily used in the
film and broadcast industry. Disney, Mediaset, SAE and Skywalker Sound use these consoles.
9000 series
The 9000 J and K series are widely used in the R&B, Classical and Pop genres. Wyclef Jean among many others
have used this console in his private studio.
